The Passionate Shepherd to His Love Analysis

The Passionate Shepherd to His Love Analysis Love is not quick Is ones eager love and admiration enough to last forever? So Marlowes Passionate Shepherd To His Love would think so. On the other hand, Raleighs Nymph Reply To The Shepherd would confidently disagree, as she does not believes his hasty words. Marlowe writes a naive, rash, and rather bold poem which attempts to confess his feelings and paints a picture of what love could be. He fills the canvas with dream like scenery and promising words of materialistic items to win ones affection. Raleighs response in Nymph prompts the reader to see reasoning and a sense of reality that contrasts with Marlowes words of the Shepherd. In Passionate Shepherd To His Love, Marlowes style for the poem is pastoral. He seems to glorify the simplicity of life and idealize a perfect world by utilizing nature to create his utopian scene. In the lines And we will sit upon the rocks, Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,(Marlowe 777) he portrays an innocent notion of affection by simply admiring other shepherds feeding sheep alongside his love. The authors soft-spoken line,By shallow rivers, to whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals,(Marlowe 777) illustrates spending time by the river with waterfalls as birds sing melodies. These are one of many naive illusions the shepherd attempts to charm his love with. Marlowes shepherd is filled with nothing but eager promises that are not realistic. The shepherd seeks love, yet is first confined to proving his worth. In beginning, Marlow speaks of practical promises such as, A cap of flowers and kirtle Embroidered all with leave of myrtle; A gown made of the finest wool Which from our pretty lambs we pull (Marlowe 777). The pastoral style and the earthy feeling of nature are still visible when he speaks of flowers being made caps and skirts made of leaves. His practical promises quickly shift into unattainable ones as he begins to sound desperate as he states, A belt of straw and ivy buds, With Coral clasp and amber studs (Marlowe 777) The work of a shepherd cannot gather such raw items, as they are both too costly for him and also rare in the countryside. The poem is filled with open-ended promises where, in a perfect world, it would be enough to win the affection someones love. In the Nymphs Reply to the Shepherd, Raleigh is straightforward when addressing the shepherd. He uses the words and stanzas in a ruthless way, utilizing them in such a manner of deliberation and precision, that it sets the tone of a distinct response to Marlowe. The feminine persona of the nymph sets up hypothetical questions that disregard mans impulses of transitory promises. Raleigh begins by speaking of a naive world with a skeptical shepherd and his kind gestures that may win the affection of the nymph. Similar to Marlowe, who incorporates nature in his writing, Raleigh exploits the idea of the outdoors by expressing flawless responses. In the first example, Time drives the flocks from field to fold, When Rivers rage and Rocks grow cold(Raleigh 782). Raleigh puts an end to the simple gazing of flocking sheep, as its time for them to be put away, and the rocks growing cold insist a change in weather. In line 6, the stressed emphasis of R and its combined clashing sound supports the harsh distinction of Raleighs nature. Rather than Marlowes safe and consistent shallow stream, Raleigh illustrates a raging river that can be dangerous and destructive. The overall idea expressed in line 5 and 6 is that small moments dont last forever and making quick-hearted decisions will eventually lead to a negative outcome. As both authors integrate nature in their pieces, the differences in season describe a general feeling to each poem. Marlowe speaks of beautiful valleys, hills, groves, beds of roses, and alluring mountainsides, therefore the reader can assume the season as spring. Raleigh, however, expresses practicality, using winter to illustrate that, just as spring, love is not always everlasting.   He depicts this in Lines 9 and 10, The flowers do fade, and wanton fields, To wayward winter reckoning yields(Raliegh 782). The over all message that Raleigh is trying to convey can be expressed with in two lines, A honey tongue, a heart of gall, Is fancys spring, but sorrows fall,(782) he stating that if someones only chooses to see the short pleasure of love, over a long-term commitment, it will only lead in unhappiness. Marlowes theme suggests carpe diem, or to seize the day, as Raleigh exercises both carpe diem and tempus fugit, to seize the time. A better explanation of this is better expressed by Dr. Bruce Magee who explains that, Normally we should seize the day because time flies. Raleigh argues that because time flies, we should NOT seize the day.(Magee) This is a concurring statement because instead of making impulsive decisions in life, one should wait to evaluate possible outcomes before determining a significant choice. The Passionate Shepherd To His Love Analysis The Passionate Shepherd To His Love Analysis The passionate shepherd to his love is a poem written by Christopher Marlowe of love promises from a shepherd to his potential lover set in a pastoral community. The shepherd is trying to convince a maiden to become his lover through romantic words that reveal their community as the best place to nurture their love. He is also ready to do everything in his power to please and make her happy if she heeds to his pleas. The shepherd is eager to cease the moment and have her love in the present situation (Payne John 714). The poem uses the word passionate to show the strong sexual urges that the shepherd has towards his object of desire. Throughout the poem, there are numerous promises and pleas by the shepherd but the maiden neither appears nor responds to his statements. The shepherd is convinced that all their pleasures will begin when she decides to live with him as his love. Summary of the stanzas In the first stanza, we are acquainted with an unidentified shepherd who appeals to a woman to join him by living together. He promises her ultimate pleasure if she agrees to live with him. There is no mention of marriage but just the will to accommodate her in his wife. The way he offers his promises show that the woman is a tough nut to crack, thus he has to make exaggerated and sometimes-impossible pledges. All their adventures are bound to happen in the pastoral settings in the ambience of nature. A common connotation for such an invitation would signify that the shepherd wanted to make love to the unidentified woman. He even suggests the private places such as the valleys, fields, woods, or hills where their love would consume them and they would derive pleasure. In the second stanza, the shepherd is keen to elaborate to the woman the perfect time for their love to bloom. The way he explains the environment at that time suggests that the season would either be spring or summer. This is because he mentions beautiful grounds where they could sit in comfort wile watching the flocks eating grass (Marlowe 67). The birds will be singing madrigals symbolize springtime as bird signals refer to a new season. The existence of grass also emphasizes on the season and the other shepherds will aid him by feeding his flock. He will seize the free time to spend the moments with his new lover as they savour the beauty of nature. All these activities in the second stanza will be done after they made love and were reminiscing of the moments they shared. The third stanza culminates into a scenario where the shepherd doubles his efforts of convincing the woman to be his lover. He does this by adding lucrative promises to the initial ones that will entice the woman to follow him to his house. He pledges to set up a variety of beds for her that has a thousand posies. The poem is full of hyperbole since the shepherd is consistent in making impossible and exaggerated promises just to gain the feedback from the woman. He even promises to dress her in magnificent kirtle adorned with other embellishments that will enhance her beauty. The kirtle seems to be a customary dress code but he promises to decorate it to show his appreciation of her acceptance for his love. In the fourth stanza, he is willing to share his riches with her by adorning her with a gown made of finest wool. He will turn the shearing procedure of obtaining the wool from the sheep into a graceful pulling session. This scenario represents his willingness to put effort into adorning his woman with all the things he can afford, thus the reason why he mentioned slippers made of nothing but pure gold. He continues alluring the woman in stanza five by taking care of all the tiny detains of her clothes. He talks of coral clasps will act as buttons and her costume will have a straw belt in addition to ivy-buds. He also takes the chance to remind the woman of how pleasurable their love will be if she accepts him. However, he does not go into detail of those pleasures he had aforementioned because in his heart he is convinced that she remembers them. The six and last stanza shows the shepherdà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢s last chance on convincing the woman to be his love. He promises her that if she agrees to love him his fellow shepherds referred to as swains will sing and dance in honour of them. He says that every day of their life will be filled with laughter and the shepherds will always sing and dance for them. In the last sentence, he simplifies the magnitude of her decision by simply asking him to come and live with her to enjoy those delights. In the poem, he uses couplets to emphasize his objectives because they use the same line in different stanzas such as the repetition of the words à ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€¹Ã…“live with me and come be my love.à ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢ Conclusion The poem generally shows that it is not easy to get love and sometimes people have to put effort. The shepherd doe not talk of the future or the past but hopes to get the woman in the present. His description about his motives is mainly geared towards satisfying his sexuality. He seems to have admired her so much to the extent of wanting her to give up her chastity. In the beginning, one would have thought that this is just a dream of an idle shepherd as he watched his flock but the mention of passion indeed shows there is a woman. The shepherd is not rich but he is willing to sacrifice whatever little he has to adorn his potential lover with the things he knows she deserves as his lover. He embarks on a journey to convince his lover with the same hard work he ploughs when he caters for his flock (Marlowe 67). He does not mention an aim of having a long time commitment but in the last stanza, he says that every day of their lives will be filled with happiness. This shows that he is w illing to nurture his love for the woman to last an eternity if she accepts him. The shepherd portrays a kind of love that innocent and pure yet filled with many erotic fantasies may be because she is the woman he has dreamt of having all his life. Throughout the poem, the shepherd is convinced that all their pleasures will begin when she decides to live with him as his love.

Salem Power Plant :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Salem Harbor power plant is a serious threat to the public health – and it may only get worse. There is a severe concern about toxic air emissions from the prior waste disposal practices. That is why Bush’s energy plan doesn’t quite work? In the Salem Evening News it says that, â€Å"The Bush plan only pays lip service to the threat of global warming, the greatest environmental danger of our time.† (Kert Davies) The Bush plan may of solved the threat of global warming, but in reality Pollution from oil- and coal-burning power plants kills more people in Massachusetts every year than homicides and drunken driving combined. Why should the public be harmed every time they decide to take a jog around the block? People are dying each year due to the Salem Harbor power plant. â€Å"The activists planted crosses to symbolize the deaths caused by the mining and burning of coal made, making the point that the Bush plan is over reliant on coal, a dirty energy source.† (Davies) Not only does the Salem Harbor power plant kill people each year but other plants such as; â€Å"Brayton Point in Somerset; Canal Station in Sandwich; Mystic Station in Everett; Mt. Tom Station in Holyoke; and Somerset Station in Somerset† (Davies) kill people too. The real factor that kills the people is the coal. It may not seem it but â€Å"coal kills the people who mine it, and when corporate polluters burn it – coal destroys our air, and shortens lives.† (Davies) So should the general public be harmed everyday when they decide to go for a jog in the morning? What can be done to prevent coal from being used? There are enough new gas-fired power plants under construction to supply nearly half of New England’s peak demand. â€Å"Two new gas pipelines are now operational, adding enough natural gas supply to New England to power all the new plants currently being built.† (Davies) We don’t get our power from a particular power plant, but from the web of power plants and transmission lines across the region called the â€Å"grid.† â€Å"These new plants will come on line over the next one to two years, to compete against the old, dirty units to supply our electric power.† (Davies) So using the gas pipelines is one way to cut down on the coal. How about another way? In fact there

The country has a varied terrain that ranges from low-lying coastal flats along the North and Baltic seas, to a central area of rolling hills and river valleys, to heavily forested mountains and snow-covered Alps in the south. Germany has a long, complex history and rich culture, but it did not become a unified nation until 1871. Before that time, Germany had been a confederacy (1815-1867). Anatomy of a Research Paper -- essays research papers

Wodge: A Definition "I don't want a great wodge of prose, but about double what we have at present." (Ezra Pound, 1913) The word wodge, whose meaning can be surmised from its heavy, lumpish sound, is not particularly common in American usage. It is, however, a wonderful word that ought to be given more recognition. It offers a more vivid description than its synonyms, for example, blob, cluster, or clump. A highly descriptive word, wodge is developed from a combination of the words wad and wedge, the sound of which evokes images of weight and sedentariness. The word wodge has sprung from a combination of two other words, wad and wedge, but is vastly more entertaining than either. A wedge is generally two principal faces of hard material meeting at an acute angle to be used for raising, holding, or splitting an object; or also to squish or cram oneself or another object into an ill-fitting space in the manner of a wedge. A wad, on the other hand, is a small lump, mass, ball, roll, or bundle of some matter, usually soft or fibrous, i.e., cotton, wool, straw, cloth, paper, or money. Wodge embodies both of these concepts. Resting somewhere between wedge, which has a more mathematical, precise, and triangular meaning, and wad, which is crumpled, disorderly, and usually made of paper, wodge seems to be lumpy, u...

Au Bon Pain Case Study Essay

Business Strategy: Au Bon Pain (ABP) is an upscale French Bakery chain restaurant that competes with other fast food restaurants. They would like to go from a â€Å"Cycle of Failure† to differentiating themselves from their competitors by improving their customer experience. Alignment: Au Bon Pain wanted to differentiate themselves from other fast food chains by increasing the customer experience so that there would be more repeat customers and a consistent income stream. This meant improving relationships with customers which would increase if they had positive experiences and name recognition by staff. ABP had to decrease turnover of staff and increase autonomy at local stores to create the experience that they wanted for their customers. They did this by creating the Partner/Manager Program, which created Partner Managers at stores who were more autonomous in the day-to-day decision-making, and in turn, shared in profits. The program meant that Partner Managers now shared in 35% of the profits, Assistants shared in 15% of the profits, which was a significant increase in the reward/compensation structure at the company. By changing the reward structure, PM and Assistant Managers took on more responsibility for their individual store which changed their role to include things like ordering, staffing, and store aesthetics. During the trial of the Partner/Manager program, the two stores that volunteered to participate both had managers from different backgrounds who were very driven, independent, and creative. ABP central management hoped that a program like the Partner/Manager Program would help them to recruit more staff that espoused these characteristics, which they viewed as vital to their success and growth. Application: ABP changed the reward structure to increase productivity. This is consistent with the Expectancy Theory in which employees figure in Expectancy (the belief that effort will lead to results, in this case increased compensation), Instrumentality (the belief that a desired outcome will come from performance, in this case increased store profits will lead to increased personal compensation), and valence (the outcome, in this case  increased compensation). The effort of the PM and Assistant Managers increased because their expectation of compensation was directly related to the profits of the store, which meant that the desired outcome of the company and employees were aligned and profits increased. The profit-sharing compensation method used by ABP is similar to the method that Whole Foods uses. The difference is that ABP only involves the Partner/Manager and Assistant Manager in profit sharing while Whole Foods shares profits with all employees through their â€Å"Gainsharing† Program. While at ABP the Partner/Manager Program increases the dedication, productivity, and hopefully decreases turnover of those involved in profit-sharing, it does not do anything for the hourly employees who have a high turnover rate and are the ones that actually have the direct customer interaction at the registers, cleaning the stores, and making the food. This could lead to problems for ABP since the hourly employees are directly related to the consumer experience that the ABP is trying to improve, and this program does not address them. Exhibit: Roles: With the introduction of the Partner-Manager Program, Au Bon Pain looked to transform the roles of District Manager, create a Partner Manager and Assistant Manager who shared in the profits, and increase autonomy in each store. In the old system, the District Managers micromanaged their stores, but in the new system they were given more stores and had to focus on the big.

Harry said, real surprised.Does he? said Hermione, looking startled. I wonder what hes up to? I dont know whether you should go, Harry. She looked nervously around and hissed, It force make you late for Sirius. It was true that going down to Hagrids at midnight would mean cutting off his meeting with Sirius very fine thus Hermione suggested sending Hedwig down to Hagrids to tell him he couldnt go always assuming she would take to take the note, of course Harry, however, thought it ruin just to be quick at whatever Hagrid precious him for. Hagrid had some harebrained scheme in hand, which might make him miss Sirius. If they didnt get there soon, he was going to turn around, go straight back to the castle, and leave Hagrid to enjoy his moonlit stroll with Madame Maxime. But then when they had walked so far around the perimeter of the forest that the castle and the lake were out of sight Harry hear something. hands were shouting up aheadthen came a deafening, earsplitting roarHagrid led Madame Maxime around a clump of trees and came to a halt. Harry hurried up on board them for a split second, he thought he was seeing bonfires, and men darting around them and then his mouth fell open.Dragons. quadruplet fully grown, enormous, vicious-looking dragons were rearing onto their hind legs inside an enclosure fenced with thick planks of wood, roar ing and huffing torrents of fire were shooting into the dark flip out from their open, fanged mouths, fifty feet above the ground on their outstretched necks. Mesmerized, Harry looked up, high above him, and saw the eye of the black dragon, with vertical pupils like a cats, bulging with either fear or rage, he couldnt tell which. It was making a horrible noise, a yowling, riot scream.Keep back there, Hagrid shout out a wiz ard near the fence, toilsome on the chain he was holding. Several tons of sinewy, scaly-black dragon hit the ground with a thud that Harry could have verbalize made the trees behind him quake. The dragon keepers let down their wands and walked forward to their fallen charges, each of which was the size of a small hill. They hurried to secure the chains and f asten them securely to contract pegs, which they forced deep into the ground with their wands.Wan a impendent look? Hagrid asked Madame Maxime excitedly. The pair of them go right up to the fence, and Harry followed. The wizard who had warned Hagrid not to come any closer turned, and Harry realise who it was Charlie Weasley. All right, Hagrid? he panted, coming over to talk. They should be approve now we put them out with a Sleeping Draft on the way here, thought it might be enumerateter for them to wake up in the dark and the quiet but, like you saw, they werent prosperous, not happy at all -What breeds you got here, Charlie? said Hagrid, gazing at the closest dragon, the black one, with something chose to reverence. Its eyes were still just open. Harry could see a stripper of gleaming yellow on a lower floor its wrinkled black eyelid. This is a Magyar Horntail, said Charlie. Theres a Common rip off Green over there, the smaller one a Swedish Short-Snout, that blue-gray and a Chinese Fireball, thats the red.Charlie looked around Madame Maxime was strolling away around the edge of the enclosure, gazing at the stunned dragons.I didnt know you were bringing her, Hagrid, Charlie said, frowning. The champions arent supposed to know whats coming shes bound to tell her student, isnt she?Jus thought shed like ter see em, shrugged Hagrid, still gazing, enraptured, at the dragons. in reality romantic date, Hagrid, said Charlie, shaking his head. quad said Hagrid, so its one fer each o the champions, is it? Whatve they gotta do fight em?Just get past them, I think, said Charlie. Well be on hand if it gets nasty, Extinguishing Spells at the ready. They wanted nesting mothers, I dont know whybut I tell you this, I dont envy the one who gets the Horntail. Vicious thing. Its back ends as dangerous as its front, look.Charlie pointed toward the Horntails tail, and Harry saw long, bronze-colored spikes protruding along it every few inches.Five of Charlies fellow keepers staggered up to the Horntail at that moment, carrying a clutch of great granite-gray eggs between them in a blanket. They placed them carefully at the Horntails side. Hagrid let out a moan of longing.Ive got them counted, Hagrid, said Charlie sternly. Then he said, Hows Harry?Fine, said Hagrid. He was still gazing at the eggs.Just hope hes still fine after hes faced this lot, said Charlie grimly, looking out over the dragons enclosure. I didnt dare tell Mum what hes got to do for the first task shes already having kittens about him. Charlie imitated his mothers anxious voice. How could they let him enter that tournament, hes much too materialization I thought they were all safe, I thought there was going to be an age limit She was in floods after that passing(a) Prophet article about him. He still cries about his parents Oh signalize him, I never knewHarry had had enough. swear to the fact that Hagrid wouldnt miss him, with the attractions of four dragons and Madame Max ime to submit him, he turned silently and began to walk away, back to the castle. He didnt know whether he was glad hed seen what was coming or not. perchance this way was better. The first shock was over now. Maybe if hed seen the dragons for the first time on Tuesday, he would have passed out cold in front of the whole schoolbut maybe he would in any case.He was going to be armed with his wand which, just now, felt like nothing more than a narrow strip of wood against a fifty-foot-high, scaly, spike-ridden, fire-breathing dragon. And he had to get past it. With everyone watching. How?Harry sped up, skirting the edge of the forest he had just under fifteen minute of arcs to get back to the fireside and talk to Sirius, and he couldnt remember, ever, lacking(p) to talk to someone more than he did right now when, without warning, he ran into something very solid.Harry fell backward, his glasses askew, clutching the cloak around him. A voice nearby said, Ouch Whos there?Harry ha stily look into that the cloak was covering him and hay very still, staring up at the dark outline of the wizard he had hit. He recognized the goateeit was Karkaroff.Whos there? said Karkaroff again, very suspiciously, looking around in the darkness. Harry remained still and silent. After a minute or so, Karkaroff seemed to decide that he had hit some sort of animal he was looking around at waistline height, as though expecting to see a dog. Then he crept back under the cover of the trees and started to edge forward toward the place where the dragons were. precise slowly and very carefully, Harry got to his feet and set off again as fast as he could without making too much noise, hurrying through the darkness back toward Hogwarts. He had no doubt whatsoever what Karkaroff was up to. He had sneaked off his ship to try and envision out what the first task was going to be. He might even have spotted Hagrid and Madame Maxime heading off around the forest together they were hardly diff icult to spot at a distanceand now all Karkaroff had to do was follow the sound of voices, and he, like Madame Maxime, would know what was in store for the champions.By the looks of it, the only champion who would be facing the unknown on Tuesday was Cedric.Harry reached the castle, slipped in through the front doors, and began to climb the marble stairs he was very out of breath, but he didnt dare slow down.He had less than five minutes to get up to the fire.Balderdash he gasped at the Fat Lady, who was snoozing in her frame in front of the portrait hole.If you say so, she muttered sleepily, without opening her eyes, and the picture swung forward to admit him. Harry climbed inside. The common room was deserted, and, judging by the fact that it smelled quite normal, Hermione had not undeniable to set off any Dungbombs to secure that he and Sirius got privacy.Harry pulled off the Invisibility Cloak and threw himself into an armchair in front of the fire. The room was in semidarknes s the flames were the only source of light. Nearby, on a table, the Support Cedric Diggory badges the Creeveys had been trying to rectify were glinting in the firelight. They now read POTTER in reality STINKS. Harry looked back into the flames, and jumped.Siriuss head was sitting in the fire. If Harry hadnt seen Mr. Diggory do exactly this back in the Weasleys kitchen, it would have scared him out of his wits. Instead, his face breaking into the first smile he had worn for days, he scrambled out of his chair, crouched down by the hearth, and said, Sirius howre you doing?Sirius looked different from Harrys shop of him. When they had said good-bye, Siriuss face had been gaunt and sunken, surrounded by a quantity of long, black, matt hair but the hair was short and clean now, Siriuss face was fuller, and he looked younger, much more like the only photograph Harry had of him, which had been taken at the Potters wedding.never mind me, how are you? said Sirius seriously.Im - For a second, Harry essay to say fine but he couldnt do it. forwards he could stop himself, he was talking more than hed talked in days about how no one believed he hadnt entered the tournament of his own free will, how Rita Skeeter had lied about him in the Daily Prophet, how he couldnt walk down a corridor without being sneered at and about Ron, Ron not believing him, Rons jealousyand now Hagrids just shown me whats coming in the first task, and its dragons, Sirius, and Im a goner, he finished desperately.Sirius looked at him, eyes full of concern, eyes that had not yet lost the look that Azkaban had given them that deadened, haunted look He had let Harry talk himself into silence without interruption, but now he said, Dragons we can deal with, Harry, but well get to that in a minute I havent got long hereIve broken into a wizarding house to use the fire, but they could be back at any time. There are things I pauperisation to warn you about. What? said Harry, feeling his spirits slip a further few notches.Surely there could be nothing worse than dragons coming?Karkaroff, said Sirius. Harry, he was a devastation Eater. You know what Death Eaters are, dont you?Yes he what?He was caught, he was in Azkaban with me, but he got expellingd. Id bet everything thats why Dumbledore wanted an Auror at Hogwarts this stratum to keep an eye on him. Moody caught Karkaroff. Put him into Azkaban in the first place.Karkaroff got released? Harry said slowly his brain seemed to be struggling to absorb yet another piece of shocking information. Why did they release him?He did a deal with the Ministry of Magic, said Sirius bitterly. He said hed seen the error of his ways, and then he named nameshe put a load of other people into Azkaban in his place.Hes not very popular in there, I can tell you. And since he got out, from what I can tell, hes been teaching the Dark Arts to every student who passes through that school of his. So watch out for the Durmstrang champion as wel l.Okay, said Harry slowly. Butare you saying Karkaroff put my name in the goblet? Because if he did, hes a really good actor. He seemed furious about it. He wanted to stop me from competing. We know hes a good actor, said Sirius, because he convinced the Ministry of Magic to set him free, didnt he? Now, Ive been keeping an eye on the Daily Prophet, Harry -- you and the rest of the world, said Harry bitterly.- and reading between the lines of that Skeeter womans article last month, Moody was attacked the night before he started at Hogwarts. Yes, I know she says it was another false alarm, Sirius said hastily, seeing Harry about to speak, but I dont think so, somehow. I think someone tried to stop him from getting to Hogwarts. I think someone knew their job would be a lot more difficult with him around. And no ones going to look into it too intimately Mad-Eyes heard intruders a bit too often. But that doesnt mean he cant still spot the real thing. Moody was the best Auror the Ministry ever had.Sowhat are you saying? said Harry slowly. Karkaroffs trying to kill me? But why?Sirius hesitated.Ive been nearing some very strange things, he said slowly. The Death Eaters seem to be a bit more active than usual lately. They showed themselves at the Quidditch World Cup, didnt they? Someone set off the Dark Markand then did you hear about that Ministry of Magic witch whos gone missing?Bertha Jorkins? said Harry.Exactlyshe disappeared in Albania, and thats definitely where Voldemort was rumored to be lastand she would have known the Triwizard Tournament was coming up, wouldnt she?Yeah, butits not very likely shed have walked straight into Voldemort, is it? said Harry.Listen, I knew Bertha Jorkins, said Sirius grimly. She was at Hogwarts when I was, a few years above your dad and me. And she was an idiot. Very nosy, but no brains, none at all. Its not a good combination, Harry. Id say shed be very easy to charm into a trap.Soso Voldemort could have found out about the tou rnament? said Harry. Is that what you mean? You think Karkaroff might be here on his orders?I dont know, said Sirius slowly, I just dont knowKarkaroff doesnt strike me as the type whod go back to Voldemort unless he knew Voldemort was powerful enough to protect him. But whoever put your name in that goblet did it for a reason, and I cant help thinking the tournament would be a very good way to attack you and make it hook like an accident.Looks hike a really good plan from where Im standing, said Harry grinning bleaky. Theyll just have to stand back and let the dragons do their stuff.Right these dragons, said Sirius, speaking very quickly now. Theres a way, Harry. Dont be tempted to try a Stunning Spell dragons are strong and too powerfully magical to be knocked out by a single Stunner, you need about half a twelve wizards at a time to get the better of a dragon -Yeah, I know, I just saw, said Harry. But you can do it alone, said Sirius. There is away, and a simple spells all you need. Just -But Harry held up a hand to silence him, his heart suddenly dog pound as though it would burst. He could hear footsteps coming down the spiral staircase behind him.Go he hissed at Sirius. Go Theres someone comingHarry scrambled to his feet, hiding the fire if someone saw Siriuss face within the walls of Hogwarts, they would raise an almighty uproar the Ministry would get dragged in he, Harry, would be questioned about Siriuss whereabouts Harry heard a tiny pop in the fire behind him and knew Sirius had gone. He watched the bottom of the spiral staircase. Who had decided to go for a stroll at one oclock in the morning, and stopped Sirius from telling him how to get past a dragon? It was Ron. Dressed in his maroon paisley pajamas, Ron stopped dead facing Harry across the room, and looked around.Who were you talking to? he said.Whats that got to do with you? Harry snarled. What are you doing down here at this time of night?I just wondered where you - Ron broke off, shr ugging. Nothing. Im going back to bed.Just thought youd come nosing around, did you? Harry shouted. He knew that Ron had no idea what hed walked in on, knew he hadnt done it on purpose, but he didnt care at this moment he hated everything about Ron, right down to the several inches of strip down ankle showing beneath his pajama trousers. forbidding about that, said Ron, his face reddening with anger. Shouldve realized you didnt want to be disturbed. Ill let you get on with practicing for your next interview in peace.Harry seized one of the POTTER REALLY STINKS badges off the table and chucked it, as hard as he could, across the room. It hit Ron on the forehead and bounced off. There you go, Harry said. Something for you to wear on Tuesday. You might even have a scar now, if yonre golden.Thats what you want, isnt it?He strode across the room toward the stairs he half expected Ron to stop him, he would even have desire Ron to throw a punch at him, but Ron just stood there in his to o-small pajamas, and Harry, having stormed upstairs, lay awake in bed fuming for a long time subsequently and didnt hear him come up to bed.
